Frequently Asked Questions

1. About Tutoring

Why choose Medfield Tutoring?

A typical student’s day consists of waking up early, going to school for 6 hours and then attending sports practices, music lessons, community service, club meetings, student government…Then there is homework to do, tests to worry about, report cards, and inevitably thinking about getting into college.

At Medfield tutoring, Heather understands how stressful a student’s life can be. She is here to simplify the learning process.

Multi-Subject Help: With Medfield Tutoring, students can choose more than one subject to work on during each session. Ex. Going over physics and algebra in one session and then outlining an English paper the next

Proactive Learning: The ultimate goal is to help students reach their academic goals by teaching them how to become more efficient and effective learners.

Personalization: At Medfield tutoring, Heather likes to get to know her students on a personal level. She works side by side with each student to define and achieve academic goals in a safe and comfortable setting. Along the way, she will address each student’s strengths and weaknesses, study habits, and develop valuable learning and test taking strategies.

Flexibility: Heather comes to your home and makes scheduling sessions easy.

100% Guarantee: Medfield Tutoring puts our students first. Sometimes we are not the right fit.

Why should I hire a tutor?

“I will learn it later” Teachers rarely have time to explain concepts multiple times, or stop and make sure each student understands the material. This usually leaves students bewildered. The student then turns to the “I will learn it later” mindset, which usually ends in frustration after long hours trying to grasp all the concepts they did not learn in class.

“I will learn it now” Hiring a personal tutor provides your child with one-on-one support. This extra time allows the student to ask questions, retain information, and relax in an academically stimulating environment. There is no rushing, cramming, or endless studying. The “I will learn it later” mindset turns into “I will learn it now,” saving the student hours of studying.

Low Grades: Low grades can be caused by much more than simply not understanding subject material. Time management, deadline execution, test taking skills, organization, and other elements can cause a student’s grades to dip.

Medfield Tutoring: At Medfield Tutoring, Heather takes the time to identify why grades are slipping and address them immediately. In addition, students receive the attention they deserve, learn concepts at their own speed, ask questions, and understand and retain information confidently.

How do I know if my child needs a tutor?

  • Grades start to drop
  • Frustration and confusion with a certain subject
  • Grades do not improve no matter how hard she/he works
  • Increased negativity due to academic performance
  • May understand material, but not getting homework in on time
  • Going over homework with a parent is a struggle
  • Student is academically stressed
  • Advanced learner, or a gifted student, and has bypassed the local school system

2. Tutoring Sessions

What subjects do you tutor?

Subjects: English | Spanish | Geometry | Algebra | Calculus | Trigonometry | Biology | Chemistry | Physics

Multi-Subject Tutoring: Our students are not limited to one subject and can choose multiple subjects during each session.

How long is each session?

Full Hour Sessions: Normally sessions run for one full hour. One hour is usually enough time to make sure the student understands  and absorbs the subject material, ask questions, and practice learning and test taking strategies.

Half Hour Sessions: Half hour sessions are available and usually encouraged to schedule if the students wants to review an upcoming test, brainstorm or outline a paper or has only a hand full of questions in a certain subject.

Where do we meet for tutoring?

A location is based on the student’s preference. We want to find a place where the student feels comfortable and is able to focus. Heather usually tutors at the students home or at the local library.

How often do we meet in a week?

Students can schedule as many sessions as they would like. It is advised to request as much time as you need in advance.

What should I expect during my first tutoring session?

The goals of the first tutoring session are to get to know you and help you succeed academically. We will define goals, take care of paperwork and see where you are at, in terms of academics and skills.

Usually, you will be asked to bring any previous tests or quizzes so that the tutor can see what your strengths and weaknesses are. From there, Heather will be by your side every step of the way.

Do you just focus on the material I am working on now?

The ultimate goal of Medfield Tutoring is to help students become proactive independent learners. Heather assists students with the content material, while discussing study habits, time management skills, and test preparation. She aims to give her students the tools to succeed on their own.

3. Scheduling

Can I have a standing appointment each week or can I schedule session by session as needed?

Either option is suitable.

With standing appointments, students have the advantage of making sure that they have a reserved time during the week.

The popular method is a combination of the two: students will set up a standing set of appointments (i.e. Tuesdays from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM), and then will add one-time lessons to gain extra support for exams or to prepare for major assignments that are due.

Heather also has weekend hours available to accommodate busy schedules.

What if I need to cancel my session?

Medfield Tutoring cancellation policy is 24 hours notice for both student and tutor.

If I miss or cancel a session, can I make that session up?

Absolutely, just reschedule an appointment.

What if it is the week before a major exam, or I have a really important paper due? May I meet with my tutor more often?

YES, Heather expects those kinds of requests! Just call or text and Heather will schedule you another session.

5. Payments

What forms of payment are accepted?

Medfield Tutoring accepts cash or check in person before or after each session.

When is payment due?

When am I entitled to a refund?

If you have paid in advance for an individual lesson and that lesson is cancelled in accordance with the Medfield Tutoring cancellation policy then you are entitled to a full and prompt refund.
